Why do people get trampled to death?
Q. I mean, a Wal-Mart employee was killed when a new video game system was released and I just learned that in Germany, 15 people were killed in a tunnel at a techno music gathering. What's wrong with people? Is it mob psychology? Or simply being heartless?

A. When it's something like a fire or other life threatening experience, people have an instinctive survival mode that kicks in and it's every man for him/herself. As far as stupid promotional sales or concert/entertainment mobs, I don't know. I avoid those at all costs.

SHe was also overly sweet which added to their embarrassment. As far as mob psychology none of them wanted to be left alone so they all stuck to gether by dispersing

Q. im trying to find the term for this situation: suppose that their is a large crowd around someone like a judge, and they are discussing whether someone is guilty or not. So, someone in the crowd shouts out that he is guilty because of so and so. and how he manages to influence the whole group to seeing the way he does just by shouting out his opinion... i thought it was like called the mob theory, how the whole crowd automatically fights for the same position... but when i looked it up online i came across crowd psychology. im not sure which one is right or if either of them is...please help. please write the name of the term and a description of the situation so i can make sure it applies to the book the crucible by Arthur Miller. … [cont.]

A. I think that a better term is mob psychology, which relates to the concept that people tend to act out differently in a crowd because of the availability of anonymity and the likelihood of getting away with actions which would not be tolerated in a one on one situation.

The Handmaid's Tale/1984 Oral Presentation Help?
Q. At school I'm going to do an oral presentation, titled: "The Individual In The Mob: How Do Orwell And Atwood Portray In "1984" And "The Handmaid s Tale" Respectively The Theme Of Mob Psychology Transforming Individuals And Making Them Behave In Ways The Otherwise Would Not?" In "The Handmaid's Tale", I'm going to analyze 2 scenes - Janine's "Testifying" (chapter 13) and the "Particicution" (chapter 43). In "1984" I'm going to analyze the "2 Minutes Hate" scene near the start of the book. Basically, I'm trying to show how strong phenomenon mob psychology is, in that it made sane characters (Offred and Winston) change into irrational ones who follow the delusions and ideals of the dystopia (when usually they would not). A. Here is a good quote for you from 1984. From Shmoop Lit/Quotes and Thoughts on Power: "In its second minute the Hate rose to a frenzy. ... People were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the tops of their voices in an effort to drown the maddening bleating voice that came from the screen. The little sandy-haired woman had turned bright pink, and her mouth was opening and shutting like that of a landed fish. Even O'Brien's heavy face was flushed. He was sitting very straight in his chair, his powerful chest swelling and quivering as though he were standing up to the assault of a wave. The dark-haired girl behind Winston had begun crying out "Swine! Swine! Swine!" and suddenly she picked up aheavy Newspeak dictionary and… [cont.]

What do you think about the people at these town hall meetings?
Q. Well this is a bit of my thought process on the whole thing, whats your take? it seems as if the sleeping giant is waking, what I'm talking about of course, is the events taking place at the town hall meetings. It reminds me of the movie Network when everyone shouts out their window "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!". Well the media is framing the debate as dangerous and undemocratic, dangerous only if people don't keep their wits about them, but undemocratic, come on, this is the definition of democracy, mob rule, just a different mob. Though this mob (hopefully) may have an undemocratic intention, in that they wish to restore the Republic to its former glory through the use of the democratic means of the mob. [cont.]

The Mist: Great example of frightening religious behavior...?
Q. Minor spoiler alert. In the Stephen King movie The Mist (sorry I haven't read the book), some people get trapped in a grocery store fearing the "things in the mist" outside. They can't leave and they're stuck with this one whack job fundie Christian lady. The woman starts preaching the End Times, gets people worked up, and they actually kill someone in their fervor. I found it to be a very accurate depiction of the fear many non-fundies have of the far right Christians. If you've seen it, what did you think of the effect? Do you think it's really possible for something like that to happen? Or did it seem completely ridiculous to you? Anyone offended by it? A. I'm thinking that religious fanatics of all stripes (except perhaps Buddhists who are basically peaceful non-intervention types), have the potential to be dangerous. Religious fanaticism derails the ability to think and analyze things logically. It perverts logic by using a false set of values and criteria. How many people have been killed in the name of "god's will"? During the crusades, armies of fanatical christians slaughtered entire cities. Similarly fanatical moslems have done the same. Other activities of fanatics included the inquisitions, the torturing and burning of people at the stake, the identification of old women as "witches" because they were a bit different or maybe had some knowledge of herbal medicine, the stoning… [cont.]

A. Put signs up around campus offering "free beer" or $20 and direct them to your lab or where ever you'd be doing your experiment at a certain day and time. Once you have a nice group of people there, announce that there is no beer (or money) and that it is an experiment. Observe their reactions.

A. Isn't there a police officer at your school? You can tip them off that you are getting harassed and that you think it is getting worse and it might turn more physical or even violent. If there isn't an officer at the school call the non-emergency phone number for the local police station. They might not be able to be your body guard but they can at least keep patrol close to the school just in case something does happen. Also first thing in the morning notify the school office, secretaries, vice principal, principal, supervisor. Tell any of the teachers that you talk to. So long as the Adults KNOW! If something goes down, they are responsible and should be alert to keep something like a "baseball bat" incident from happening. The best you… [cont.]
