Conformity is the process by which an individual's attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors are conditioned by what is conceived to be what other people might perceive. This influence occurs in both small groups and society as a whole, and it may be the result of subtle unconscious influences, or direct and overt social pressure. Conformity also occurs by the "implied presence" of others, or when other people are not actually present. For example, people tend to follow the norms of society when eating or watching television, even when they are at home by themselves. People often conform from a desire to achieve a sense of security within a group—typically a group that is of a similar age, culture, religion, or educational status. Any unwillingness to conform carries with it the very real risk of social rejection. In this respect, conformity can be seen as a safe means of avoiding bullying or deflecting criticism from peers. Conformity is often associated with adolescence and youth culture, but it affects humans of all ages. Although peer pressure may be viewed as a negative trait, conformity can have either good or bad effects depending on the situation. Driving safely on the correct side of the road is a beneficial example of conformity. Conformity influences the formation and maintenance of social norms and allows society to function smoothly and predictably. Because conformity is a group phenomenon, such factors as group size, unanimity, cohesion, status, prior commitment, and public opinion all help to determine the level of conformity an individual will display. Do you become resentful and angry or do you appreciate the experience and learn something from it, like Orwell did? Why or why not? Do you think we face greater pressure to conform today and will it increase in the future? In the future, in what ways do you think British literature will change? For example, I lived most of my life in a very controlling household that linked conformity with survival, then later on had religious years where conformity also meant survival, then a marriage where conformity meant harmony (but not really). All of these times helped me to come to know myself, what I really wanted, what my right use of will was. Sure, I almost died before I came out of it, but they sure helped me get out of it. It is so wonderful to mostly free from the pressures of conformity now. I think many systems will fall over because conformity is becoming a laughing stock. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that to conform to society now is not based upon humanity… [cont.] Answered by Anonymouse - Mon Mar 10 01:57:02 2008 What to do-Atheists who are forced to conform? Q. I am an Atheist and I can not tell you how many times I am put in a situation where I have to bow my head and pray. I live in the U.S and its no surprise that I live in a very religious country. I don't want to conform but its awkward to not participate. I was curious what other people do in these situations. Please let me know, I would appreciate it. Thanks! It's not just Atheists who have to do this - I am a Muslim and I have been in maybe 2 situations where I have had to bow my head, link hands and pray. I don't get offended myself, as I just act like I'm praying but will be thinking something else in my head. That way it keeps everyone happy and nobody gets hurt - as Dave Chappelle says, there are times when keeping it real goes wrong! Q. Has evolution programmed the human subconscious to make people impose social conformity on other people? Frog: we may not be born knowing the specific rules, but I think that we are born with a desire to make other people follow the rules, whatever they may be.
