Crowd psychology is a branch of social psychology. Ordinary people can typically gain direct power by acting collectively. Historically, because large groups of people have been able to bring about dramatic and sudden social change in a manner that bypasses established due process, they have also provoked controversy. Social scientists have developed several different theories for explaining crowd psychology, and the ways in which the psychology of the crowd differs significantly from the psychology of those individuals within it. Carl Jung coined the notion of the Collective unconscious. Other major thinkers of crowd psychology include Gustave Le Bon, Wilfred Trotter, Gabriel Tarde, Sigmund Freud and Elias Canetti.

What do you think about crowd psychology?
Q. I was reading a book on self-management - it mentions to preserve your individualism and the way people are powerless to resist the powerful magnetism of the crowd. My question is what techniques can i use to preserve my own thoughts and guide myself and preserve my own individualism...I feel quite influenced by people telling me to leave college, even though I strongly dont want to - as its my life. No matter what i do or say, to defend myself or assert myself against bullies, i suppose you could call them, it seems to unaffect them, in fact they laugh and snigger they're way back to convincing me to leave why am i so influenced by them, ive never been influenced by anyone before

A. Just do your own thing and forget the others. If you get it right more often than wrong you will be doing very well. That is the best most people can hope for. No one gets it right all the time, no matter how well intentioned. Follow your heart at all times.

Whats the psychology of someone who competes?
Q. someone who needs to stay ahead and on top of the game? someone who incessantly compares and criticize to give worth? one who puts other people down to make themselves feel better? what would their main motivation be? personal? crowd pleasing? how were these individuals as children/babies? did they had to cry the loudest to have the last drop of fresh milk? or better, why do YOU compete or dont compete?? =) please, share and tell. you dont need to go in depth unless you feel generous, im curious to understand, since i dont regard myself as someone who competes.

A. As you hinted at, there are different types of competition. There's competition on a sporting level, where the main drive is to 'win', simple as that. It's just a motivation to succeed for your team, for yourself, and I don't think that it holds any psychological importance. I think it's just the way we're brought up (read social expectations), where sport is competitive and that's just how it is. But for competition on a personal level, whether for attention or about grades and stuff, it comes from the way they were brought up/who they are. Some people feel insecure and need to be make themselves feel good about the decisions that they make. So alot of people ask others about how much study they're doing, or what grades they got, to… [cont.]
